► ,600 Required in Fees To Start Horse in Derby CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — Many inquiries are received by Churchill Downs regarding how many payments an owner must make to keep a horse eligible for the Kentucky Derby. After paying 00 to nominate each horse on February 16, the owner has no more payments to make until he actually enters his horse in the race when the entries close on Thursday morning preceding the event. For each horse put in the entry box, the owner pays another 50. The owner has until forty-five minutes before the running of the Derby to withdraw his horse from the race without liability. If the horse is not withdrawn, the owner pays an additional ,250 in order for his horse to start. The total an owner must pay to start a horse in the race is ,600, of which only 00 is paid before the owner has a definite idea of how much chance his horse has to win the 00,-000 which is guaranteed the winning horse. All nominating fees, all fees to "pass the entry box," and all starting fees go to the winning owner. Second, third and fourth monies come out of the 25,000 added by the track.
