4 • Au Revoir Closes Out Jefferson Meet Ormazd Has Brother G. and Hard-Sea to Beat in Mile Feature on 10-Race Card By J. J. HAHN Staff Correspondent JEFFERSON DOWNS, Metairie, La.. May 1. — The 45-night session of Jefferson Downs comes to a close here tomorrow night. Heading the 10-race program is the Au Revoir Handicap, a spin over the one mile distance in which three-year-olds and upward are to match strides. This morning 10 passed the entry box, including an entry and heading the well-balanced field is Warren Cervini and Sons Ormazd. the early handicap champion at this 5 furlongs course. The chestnut son of Ambrose Light — Hy Broom is topweighted at 118 pounds • and is giving his opposition from half a dozen to 14 pounds. Expected to gopostward against the probable public choice are the Sidney Cap-Ian and Al Wellman entry of Brother G. and Hard-Sea, who are equally weighted at 112 pounds. Also Anthony Graffagninis Gratified, and A. J. Dentons Air Tommie, 111 each, the Steve Valenti pairing of Doges Son and Miss Dee Bee, who will carry imposts of 109, M. B. Owens Ferman 108, M. H. Girards Doris Hart 106, and I I Mrs. Preston Maddens Lucania, who got , in at the featherly impost of 104 pounds. Won First Three at Meeting Ormazd won his first three races at this course but tapered off recently and will be out to make amends for his recent defeats. Racing secretary and handicapper Kenneth Mcintosh is treating the gelding kindly, dropping weights off his most recent engagements and at 118 pounds should make it interesting for his rivals, although there | is plenty of speed in the event to carry the i I Cervini representative over a fast clip dur-ing the early running. j I Brother G. and Hard-Sea have been close when racing against the probable favorite | but all the early speed goes with Ormazd i during the early part and should benefit this pair as each lacks early footing and usually finishes with belated rushes.. Gratified is one of the most improved and consistent runners at this course and he must be given serious consideration, especially should the course be fast for the running of the get-away feature. Air Tommie defeated some good sprinters this week, coming from behind to get a close one but I there is some doubt that he could carry his j j speed over the one mile distance. Doges Son has not come up to expectations but Miss Dee Bee. his stablemate, considered a sprinter, is at the top of her form and could spring a surprise in going the distance. Ferman, an in-and-outer. could be dangerous, should he race back to one of his I good performances. When this -fellow is in a running mood he beats his opposition by i wide margins. He is being raised in company but under his 108 pounds may go better than expected. Doris Hart has been tried and while she races close to the pace has a habit of lugging in and usually weakens when straightened out in the stretch. Lucania had been consistent, and she like Miss Dee Bee are the only five-year-olds in the affair. On her best Lucania is capable of giving the higher-weighted one a tussle for top honors. Many other good races are carded and should weather conditions remain the same as this past week the meeting should close with a bang.
