Buckeye State Handicap Draws Octet at Maumee Banner Bond Totes 122 Pounds While After fifth Win at Meet By T. J. MULLIGAN Staff Correspondent J MAUMEE DOWNS, Maumee, Ohio. May 1. — Racing secretary Jack Klucina has arranged excellent sport for Saturdays nine-race program highlighted by the Buckeye State Handicap, which will be run as the seventh race. A small but select field of eight, including an entry, will parade post-ward for the feature which is endowed with a ,500 purse and will be decided at the popular 6 furlongs distance. Banner Bond, from the establishment of E. Golladay, will shoulder the top weight I o* 122 pounds, spotting his rivals from nine I to 15 pounds and may be capable of the j task. The altered son of Bymeabond has a very impressive record. He captured the Tiffin, an allowance test here last Wednesday, and also annexed the Gas Lite Purse, the Toledo Handicap and the Inaugural Purse. His only defeat at this oval was when he finished second to the highly regarded Phils Task in the Midwest Handicap. He is the only four-time winner at the Maumee Downs meeting and will be seeking his fifth win when starter Matt Anderson dispatches the field for the main event tomorrow afternoon. Helen Jacksons Johnny Mission has been assigned 113 pounds and should any of the contestants defeat Banner Bond this could be the one. He finished second to Banner Bond in the Tiffin Purse, beaten only three parts of a length for it all. There is a fcur-pound shift in weights with Banner Bond picking up three pounds and Johnny Mission carrying one pound less than he did when this pair matched strides here a few days ago. Guys Birthday, the Green River Stable representative, will be making his initial appearance at this session but showed to good advantage at Sunshine Park in Florida last winter and chalked up 10 victories and seven seconds last year. He has been training satisfactorily since his arrival in Ohio and trainer Guy Mays has his charge ready for a tip-top performance. Defrost, owned and conditioned by A. W. Simeondiou, and Pasta Fazuli, who races in the partnership of D. and V. Turner Jr., are equally weighted at 109 pounds each while Fred Bleckes Bert Waymar and Space Ace, who will race coupled in the wagering with Pasta Fazuli will tote 107 pounds each. This quartet have all been winners at the meeting and a hectic battle may ensue in what appears to be the most interesting race on the week-end card. J. J. Stewarts Realities is the lightweight of the party as he is asked to only pack 105 pounds.
