i Bold Venture, Ponder Passed On In 1958; Sired Derby Winners CHURCHILL DOWNS. Louisville, Ky.. May 1. — Two winners of the Kentucky Derby, each of them a sire of a horse of win the same event, died during 1958. This left eighteen winners of the famous event alive. Bold Venture, winner of the Derby in 1936, died at King Ranchs Kentucky farm on March 22, 1958. Bold Venture sired the Derby winners Assault and Middleground for King Ranch, which purchased him from Morton L. Schwartz for whom he won the race at Louisville. To the end of 1958 Bold Ventures foals had won 697 races and more than ,300,000. Ponder, son of Derby winner Pensive in the latter "s first crop of foals and sire of Derby winner Needles from his own first crop, died at Calumet Farm on October 8, 1958. To the end of last year Ponders foals had won more than 00,000 in four years of racing.
