Open View Can Bring Fame to Line Little Done as Yet | By Sire and Dam Is First Stakes Winner of Beautifully-Bred Somali II.; Matron Dueling WasClaimer Open View is by an obscure sire out of a mare who raced in claiming races and comes from a tail-female family which has not produced a prominent stakes class horse in several generations. Somali n., sire of Open View, winner of the first division of the Derby Trial, is a beautifully-bred horse who won only minor stakes in England. All told, he won but three of 22 starts and less than ,000 in purse money. Somali EL, is by Nasrullah out of Sonibai, by Solario. Sonibai won stakes at two and has produced several good winners including Hindustan, a winner of the Irish Derby. The next dam, Udaipur, won the classic Epsom Oaks, and the next dam, Uganda, won the French Oaks and the St. Leger and produced five major stakes winners. Thus, racing-wise Somali is a shirt-tail relation in a family of successes. Broke Maiden in ,500 Claimer Open View is his first stakes winner. Open Views dam. Dueling, by Blue Swords, broke her maiden when entered to be claimed for ,500. She did most of her racing at Oaklawn, Keeneland, Rockingham and Narragansett. She was tried over a distance at three, but failed on each occasion. The next dam, Sybarite, by Swinburne, has had a long producing career, including seven or eight winners, but none of them was of stakes quality. Dueling earned over 2,000 racing. At the Keeneland fall sales of 1957 Open View was purchased for ,400 and he was claimed for ,500 last year at two. In a year when so many of the Derby contenders have sprung from humble origins Open View is a perfect example of one of the meek who might inherit one of the richest of all Derby jackpots.
