Viewpoint Seeks Debutante Honors ChoiceOverTopweight Ripte In Downs Supporting Feature Sheza Honey and Tube Rose 4 Lone Coupling in 4,850 Field of 14 Juvenile Fillies By OSCAR OTIS CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — The prestige stake of the spring for two-year-old fillies here, the 4,850 Debutante at 5 furlongs, will serve as the supporting feature to the 85th Kentucky Derby Saturday. As races go at Churchill, the Debutante is a comparatively new stake, Saturdays renewal being but the 59th. A smart field of 14 passed the entry box for the Debutante, a stake which in the .past has uncovered such future distaff stars as Bubbley, Blue Grass, Whirlabout, Alcibiades and Anita Peabody, to mention but a few. If all 14 start, the winning owner will collect a gross purse of ,652.50. Favoritism will likely center upon C. V. Whitneys speedy Viewpoint, a winner at Santa Anita before shipping to Kentucky with Silver Spoon, who hinted at real class when she was second, beaten a narrow nose, by Pierpontella in a V/2 furlongs Debutante prep Monday in a sparkling :53%. The extra sixteenth at this time of the year is a real test of stamina. Lugged In Badly in Drive It is possible Viewpoint may have been best in the race as she lugged in badly all through the drive and jockey Ray York, J who will be in the irons Saturday, could not ride her out to full advantage. James L. Paddocks Ripte, although i fourth in this same tune-up race, will draw considerable backing inasmuch as she may have needed the outing. Already a stakes winner, having won the Debutante at New Orleans this winter, she later | scored over good ones in the Ballerina at Oaklawn Park. Repite is topweighted in ► the field with 122 pounds, Viewpoint gets 119. There is one coupling in the Debutante. Sheza Honey and Tube Rose going in the interests of Walter Hill and Helen W. Kellogg. Both horses have shown promise, and Tube Rose, who sparkled at Keene-land, was fifth in the Debutante prep here. She tired as if short after showing keen early speed. The prestige stake is rounded out by J. W. Buchanans Greek Top, I. J. Collins Miss Cullen, August Muckler Jr.s No Joy, L. C. Wilson and Doug Davis Jr.s Pattys Song, Hugh A. Grants Airmans Guide, Mrs. Helene Sadaccas Sandys Sis, R. F. Mahans April Five, sixth in Mondays prep, Bramac Stables Le Muy. and Hasty House Farms maiden Hasty Dancer, a daughter of Native Dancer as her name implies. Viewpoint is a "straight Whitney-bred" being by Counterpoint, a "Horse of the Year" from the good and extremely rapid stakes-winning mare Enfilade. Ripte is a daughter of Rippey, a successful sire, from Tete-A-Tete. The Debutante Stakes originally closed with 138 nominations of which 14 finally are making it postwards. The stake is ran under allowance conditions with the starting weight 119 pounds, a three pound pen- i alty for stakes winners, and ranging downward to five pounds off for maidens.
