Grand Cha! Heads Field For Virginia Gold Cup Has Nine Foes in Bid to Sweep Old Dominions Timber Features Special to Daily RaciJig Form WARRENTON, Va., May 1. — Alfred H. Smiths Grand Chal heads a field of 10 named for the 34th running of the Virginia Gold Cup here Saturday over 4 miles and 22 fences. The race is the feature of the six-event program which will start at 2:30 p. m. EDT at Broadview, William E. Schulsemeyers estate. Grand Chal, timber champion last year when he won seven of his 15 starts, has won the Deep Run Hunt Cup at Richmond and the Middleburg Hunt Cup this season and is seeking to make a sweep of the Old Dominion States major timber tests. He won the Virginia Gold Cup in 1957 and was third back of Coup-de-Vite and Coit in last years running. Others named for the race are Joseph M. Mulfords Spanish Clown, Mrs. Amory S. Carharts Drifting Wood, Mrs. George P. Greenhalgh Jr.s Judge Beacon, Clay Kep-harts Bas-Sic, Mrs. George C. Fox Cool Harbor, Mrs. J. M. Ceballos Barge Toter, Mrs. Gregory S. Mcintoshs Power Haven, Miss Phyllis Mills Royal Romance and L. P. Boyces General Patton. The Robert C. Winmill Memorial at 2 miles over brush is the co-feature on the card. It has attracted 12 chasers headed by Michael Wettachs Piesporter.
