Cahokia Downs Offering Afternoon Racing Today Phils Last Heads Field of Nine Seeking Belleville Purse Honors By A. L. SHIELDS Staff Correspondent CAHOKIA DOWNS, East St. Louis, 111., May 1. — In line with the new policy of offering afternoon racing on each Saturday in the month of May, racing secretary L. Henderson Van Zandt has come up with an interesting program of nine races for the first Saturday of this young meeting. The ,200 Belleville Purse, a starter allowance test at 1 mile and 70 yards for three -year -olds and older, will serve as the headliner and has drawn a field of nine including Carroll P. Polands stable coupling of Feraghan and Deep Dish. The field is rounded out by Partlow Farms Polo, Ozark Farms Sito, Niolon, Goodridge and Marx Warless, A. A. Arnos Roses-Last, Lawver and Smiths Phils Last, Ivan Norris Reigh Plyn, and F. H. Scrog-gins Sofie-By-By. Phils Last, the victor of the E. St. Louis Purse opening night, will probably rule the choice. Although under a drive, the six-year-old Islam — Quinlan Girl, by Sales Talk gelding defeated Sofie-By-By and Feraghan by two open lengths after coming off the pace in that 1 mile and 70 yards go and seemed to be running well within himself at the wire. Polo, a winner of nine of his starts last year, could be the one who will offer the strongest contention. He comes up to this engagement with a second to Ikie Boy in the "Marathon Prep" here opening night. The nine-year-old Piping Rock — Fedela gelding pressed the pace throughout the 1% miles journey and came to within a length of the winner at the end. He will be hard to beat if he runs back to that effort. Warless, a nine-year-old Heliopolis — Flawless Pearl gelding, was a winner of seven outings last year at such varied points as the Fair Grounds, New Orleans; Churchill Downs, Hazel Park and Detroit and was a recent winner at Jefferson Downs. Bred by the renowned Calumet Farm he could show to advantage. Sofie-By-By and Feraghan are among the others who could make their presence felt. Post time for the nine-race program is 2:15 p. m. CDT.
