Woolf Tried Eight Times In Derby Without Success CHURCHrLL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky.. May 1. — Kentucky Derby winners have been ridden by some of Americas greatest jockeys but it also has eluded some of our top reinsmen. The late George Woolf is a classic example. He had eight Derby mounts but the best he could do was a pair of seconds, with Stare tor in 1941 and Broadcloth in 1944. On the other hand, Woolf rode three straight winners of the American Derby at Washington Park, scoring with Alsab, j Askmenow and By Jimminy, in 1942, 43 I and 44, respectively.
