Time Mark Held by Fitzsimmons Mare Broken by Summer Night CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 1. — One of three track records beaten at Churchill Downs during 1958 was the mark set 47 years earlier by Summer Night, a mare owned and trained by "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons. On October 3, 1958, Perturbed, owned by Mrs. James Bar tie tt and trained by her husband, ran one and one-half miles in 2:32% to beat the former track mark by three-fifths of a second. Like Summer Night, the new record holder was a five-year-old chestnut mare when she lowered the track record for twelve furlongs. Perturbed, however, carried 112 pounds, four more than the Fitzsimmons mare had up on the day of her record performance. Summer Nights race on May 27, 1911, was one of two victories she scored at that Churchill Downs Spring meeting for her owner-trainer. The record she lowered that afternoon had stood since May 9, 1889, when Spokane had won the Kentucky Derby in 2:34V2. Incidentally, Spokanes time was the fastest in the Kentucky Derby during the twenty-one years the race was run at one and one-half miles.
