Aly Khan Registers Double in Guineas His Petite Etoile Triumphs In 1 ,000 Newmarket Classic Over Rosalba; Smith Aboard By VERNON MORGAN Reuters Sports Editor NEWMARKET, Suffolk, May 1.— Prince Aly Khan brought off a Guineas double this afternoon when his grey filly Petite Etoile won the One Thousand Guineas. Handled by the champion jockey, Douglas Smith, the grey daughter of Petition, trained by Noel Murless at Newmarket, challenged for leadership about a furlong out to win comfortably by one length from J. Astors 9 to 4 favorite Rosalba. Third and four lengths farther away was Prince Aly Khans Paraguana, which started at 5 to 2. Paraguana, French-trained filly, was expected to be the one to win the 7,111 first prize, but the Princes English-trained Petite Etoile was by no means unbacked. The last owner to win both races was King George VI with Big Game and Sun Chariot in 1942. The winning trainer saddled five horses in the race today. Lester Piggott, stable jockey, chose Collyria, who faded with half the race still to be contested. Field Away Well The event was run over the Rowley Mile on perfect going. The starter got them away in good style. As usual the field immediately split into two groups with Fanlight and Burtonwood leading those on the stand side and Collyria and Paraguana those on the far side. After two furlongs, Fanlight forced the pace from Sariegail, Burtonwood, Collyria and Paraguana. At the half-way marker, Paraguana led Collyria with Petite Etoile and Rosalba in pursuit. With one furlong to go, Petite Etoile had grabbed the lead but was now being hotly challenged by Rosalba. However, she gamely resisted the bid and won cleverly. Paraguana carried the first colors of Aly Khan and Petite Etoile his second silks as in the 2.000 Guineas. Afterwards, Prince Aly Khan said: "The only unfortunate thing about todays race is that I sold the winners dam. Star of Iranomma. along with 42 others to Mr. Rex Ellsworth, American owner and breeder." After he had won both the One Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas, an achievement that had not been done for many years, the Aly Khan was asked what he thought about his chances of completing the Epsom double of the Derby and Oaks. He said: "I am still very confident about Saint Crespin winning the Derby but after todays success we shall have to revise our plans about the Oaks."
