! I I I I ! Troilus# Sire, Dam Present Enigma Priam II. Has Never Quite Lived Up to Promise; Drift Song Exceeded Expectations Troilus, first in the Flamingo and last in the Florida Derby, is by a stallion who never quite lived up to his promise, and out of a mare who exceeded her promise in foaling Troilus. Troilus sire, Priam n., bred in France, won important fixtures in each of the four years he raced and was assigned top weight on the French general handicap at two following his victory in the Grand Criterium at 1 mile. In subsequent seasons he won the Prix dHarcourt at nearly 11 furlongs, the Hardwicke Stakes in England at IV2 miles, and the Prix dIspahan at 9 furlongs. He was beautifully bred, being by the unbeaten Pharis, four times Frances leading sire, out of Djezima, by Asterus. Djezima is a proud producing member of one of Frances proudest tail-female families. Sire of 128 Winners Despite his racing record and strong bloodlines, Priam II., imported to this country, failed to cilck as a top-flight sire although receiving many opportunities at Almahurst Farm. Through 1958, from eight U. S. crops to race, Priam n. had sired 128 winners of 604 races and earnings of over two million dollars. His best offspring, prior to Troilus, was the incorrigible Cousin, second to Tom Fool on the Experimental Free Handicap. Troilus tail-female line had not pro- duced a stakes winner for two generations prior to Troilus. His dam. Drift Song, by Heliopolis, was unraced. Her only other foal to race is a winner. The next dam, Songburst, by Blenheim n.. won at three and has bred four moderate winners. The next dam, Joybird, by Bull Dog, won at two and became an excellent producer, one of her eight winners being Alex Barth, a J stakes winner of 24 races and 54,515. One I has to go back even farther to find classic names in this family.
