May 1.— Strongly ridden by the veteran Cal Bierman, Frank Armatos Nances Rule surprised a crowd of 20,055 by winning todays featured Gowanus Purse by almost a length over James Cox Bradys fast-finishing Landman. Leo Edwards Moon Age was a length and a half farther back at the end of the 1 1-16 miles race in a moderate 1:45 V5, while William C. MacMillen Jr.s Prince Willy was four lengths out of the money. Michael G. Phipps Taras Ring, the odds-on choice "Peejay" Bailey, finished fifth and last, after being all but left at the post. Taras Ring appeared to want to run in the back-stretch, where he briefly passed Prince Willy and Landman, but promptly dropped back to last place again. Nances Rule paid 6.10. Moon Age Assumes Command Moon Age went to the front at the start of the feature, while Taras Ring came out of the gate in a tangle after his four rivals were on their way. Moon Age continued to lead Nances Rule in the run down the backstretch and around the far turn, while there was a wide gap back to Taras Ring, Prince Willy and Landman. Passing the three -furlong pole, Nances Rule headed Moon Age, while far back. Landman moved into third place before Prince Willy, while Taras Ring fell back. Once in command, Nances Rule continued to hold sway under strong urging by Bierman. Moon Age continued lapped on the winner until they had passed the furlong pole, then weakened, while Landman finished with a belated rush that brought him to Nances Rules rump before he ran out of ground.
