IT WAS SWAPS IN 1955 — Rex Ellsworths champion, Swaps, with Willie Shoemaker in the irons, took the measure of his arch rival, Belair Studs Nashua, in the 81st Kentucky Derby on May 7, 1955. Swaps led throughout and covered the ten rurlongs in 2:01i, just two-fifths of a second off Whirlaways track mark. Mrs. John W. Galbreaths Summer Tan was third in that historic renewal of the Downs classic. I : — ; : — 1| Kentucky Derby History From Aristides to Tim Tarn Compiled by DAILY RACING FORM. Reproduction of Tabulation Is Prohibited Without Permission of DAILY RACING FORM. The Kentucky Derby, to be run this year for the eighty-fourth time, is Americas greatest horse race. No Kentucky Derby has failed to furnish some interesting occurrence to make it unforgettable. As the years pile up and renewals become history, these outstanding incidents take on added significance. In an effort to condense this information into the shortest possible space. Daily Racing Forms staff compiled the following table, showing, among other details, horses who have won, then later sired sons who won; maiden winners and favorites that finished first, second or third. The table is the most complete ever compiled on the Derby. Riders, owners and breeders of one or more winners are noted. The number of nominations and starters are easily compared.
