Whirlaway won by eight lengths. Those who witnessed his superb performance i never will forget the way he came charging down the stretch with great ground-devour- ing-strides, his long tail streaming behind him. I I Fractions for Whirlaways effort were :23%, :463/5, 1:11% and the mile in 1:37%. | At the quarter pole, with a mile of the race over. Dispose was leading "Mr. Longtail" by j two lengths, so that although the official | fraction for the final quarter was :24, I Whirlaway probably ran the distance in a sizzling :23%. | Twenty Grand held the record before Whirlaway with 2:01%, the same time required by Swaps in accounting for the 1955 j renewal.
